In 1992, the village of Bratunac, which had a majority Bosniak population, was ethnically cleansed. Starting in 1992, hundreds of Bosniaks were killed or forcibly expelled. Before the fall of Srebrenica, the area had become a central location for Serbian military and police forces in their attempts to take control of nearby Srebrenica. After it falls, thousands of prisoners were detained in various locations in Bratunac, including Vuc Karadzic school, the « technical school » and the football field, before being transferred to execution sites located further north in Zvornik area. Dozens were subjected to torture and executions.
